Mihai V. Micea has been re-elected as Head of the Department of Computer and Information Technology, with a quasi-unanimity of votes (34 for votes, 0 against votes and 1 invalid vote)

The official validation has been stated by the UPT Rector's Decision, no. 137 /112/C, from 14.01.2021. This is the second consecutive mandate for Mihai V. Micea, which will cover years 2020-2024.

50 Years Anniversary of the First Romanian Computing School, at the Politehnica Timisoara: 1966-2016

50 years ago, in 1966, two remarkable events took place at the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara, leading to the establishment of the first Romanian Computing school, in Timisoara:

  1. The first generation of engineers specialized in electronic computers in Romania, graduate in 1966 the Electro-mechanics program at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
  2. In 1966, the Romanian Ministry of Education approves the establishment of the first specialization in Electronic Computers in Romania, at the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara, which starts with a number of 20 students. This number is raised to 50 students, the next year.

The 50 Years Anniversary celebration of the of the First Romanian Computing School, at the Politehnica Timisoara, takes place on Friday, October 21, in the D01 "Alexandru Rogojan" Amphitheater, Faculty of Automation and Computers.

Mihai V. Micea follows as the department chair, to professor Dr. Eng. Vladimir Cretu, which has been Head of Department for the previous consecutive 24 years (1992-2016), with outstanding results on the development of the department.

The total of published works, as author or co-author, reached the number 100 with the journal paper "An Analysis of a Hard Real-Time Execution Environment Extension for FreeRTOS"

The paper, authored by Cristina S. Stangaciu, Mihai V. Micea and Vladimir I. Cretu, has been published in Advances in Electrical and Computer Engineering, vol. 15 (3), Nov. 2015.

A new national R&D Grant has been awarded to a team of DSPLabs, by the UEFISCDI - Ministry of Education and Research, as the result of the PN-II-RU-TE-2014 call competition

A total of 2961 project proposals have been submitted to the PN-II-RU-TE-2014 national project competition, with a final acceptance rate of ~10%.

Our project, "TEEFIOS: Time and Energy Efficient Framework for Inter-Operation of Smart devices", is developed by a research team composed of: Mihai V. Micea (Director), Vladimir I. Cretu, Dan Pescaru, Razvan D. Cioarga, Valentin Stangaciu, Cristina Stangaciu, Claudia Micea and Adriana Tirnovan.

The total amount granted by the UEFISCDI to this project is 548850 RON (~123337 EUR), for a period of 24 months (2015 - 2017).

Mihai V. Micea received the Habilitation Degree (Dr. habil.) and the Qualification of PhD Supervisor in Computers and Information Technology, at the Politehnica University of Timisoara

The Public Dissertation of the Habilitation Thesis, entitled "Research and Achievements in Real-Time and Embedded Systems, Intelligent Sensor Networks and Robotic Environments", has been held on January 16, 2015, at the Computer and Software Engineering Department, Politehnica University of Timisoara.

The Board of Scientific Referees, has been composed of the following top-level Romanian experts in the field:

  • Professor Dr. Eng. Nicoale TAPUS, Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department and Member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, Politehnica University of Bucharest;
  • Professor Dr. Eng. Sergiu NEDEVSCHI, Vice-Rector with Scientific Research and ICT, and Correspondent member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca;
  • Professor Dr. Eng. Lucian N. VINTAN, Member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu.

As a result of the evaluations and recommendations of the Scientific Referees, I have been awarded with the Habilitation Degree (Dr. habil.) and the Qualification of PhD Supervisor in Computers and Information Technology, by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, Romania, no. 3216/18.02.2015.

On October 16-18, 2014, Politehnica University of Timisoara and its Department of Computer and Software Engineering hosted the IEEE International Symposium on Robotic and Sensors Environments, ROSE 2014

ROSE is a high level scientific conference, organized annually by the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, USA. It is attended by top international experts and has a large visibility in the field. Previous editions of ROSE have been held in Canada, USA and in several European countries, such as Germany, Austria, Sweden and Italy.

Celebrating its 12th edition, ROSE 2014 enjoyed the presence of experts from USA, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Greece, Norway and Romania, who presented significant scientific contributions and technological advances in the top fields of robotic systems and intelligent sensing environments.

A new prize has been won by the DSPLabs team of students at the 21th edition "Hard&Soft" International Computers Contest for Students, Suceava 2014

At this edition of the "Hard&Soft" International Computers Contest for Students, Suceava 2014, the team composed of the following students: Emanuel POSA, Andrei PRICOCHI, Gratian BERIAN and Otilia Camelia DUMITRESCU, coached by Razvan D. CIOARGA and advised by Mihai V. MICEA, won the Third Prize! Currently, the team members have been participating to a total of three editions of the contest, all with excellent results!

Mihai V. Micea received the full Professor degree, at the Computer and Software Engineering Department, Politehnica University of Timisoara, by the Rector's Decision no. 1618/112/C at 01.10.2013

As a result of the public contest for the Professor position at the Computer and Software Engineering Department, Politehnica University of Timisoara, my application file has been endorsed by the contest committee.

Through the expertise and the scientific prestige of its members, the evaluation committee is currently of the highest level in the field, in Romania:

Two new prizes have been won by the DSPLabs teams of students at the 19th edition "Hard&Soft" International Computers Contest for Students, Suceava 2012

At this edition of the "Hard&Soft" International Computers Contest for Students, Suceava 2012, the team composed of the following students and DSPLabs team members: Victor ADASCALITEI, Andrei-George STOICA, Zsolt BIRO and Adrian-Horia OAIDA, coach Razvan D. CIOARGA, won the Second Prize. A second team, composed of the students Emanuel POSA, Andrei PRICOCHI, Gratian BERIAN and Alin Nicolae PETRA, and also coached by Razvan D. CIOARGA, won the Special Mention.

Since 1999, the teams of students, coached and advised by DSPLabs members, participated on annual basis, with few exceptions, to this international contest. Until now, at the 10th participation, they have been accumulating a total of 7 Prizes: 2 First Prizes, 4 Second Prizes and a Special Mention!

Member of the Steering Committee of the Politehnica Timisoara Foundation

Politehnica Timisoara Foundation has been officially launched on April 30th, 2010. The Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission of promoting the prestige and the image of the University, and to further develop its educational, scientific, cultural and sportive performance.

The launching ceremony, which took place in the Senate Hall of the "Politehnica" University of Timisoara, has been hosted by the University Rector, professor Nicolae Robu, the Vice-rector, professor Viorel Serban, and by the members of the Steering Committee of the Foundation.

An important number of Romanian personalities, alumni of our University, have been awarded Honorary Members of the Foundation, including: Minister Vasile Blaga, Minister Anton Anton, Secretary of State Adrian Lemeni, President of the Timis County Council Constantin Ostaficiuc, Mayor of Timisoara Gheorghe Ciuhandu, German Consul in Timisoara Klaus Brennecke, sport reporter Nicolae Secosan, handball player and coach Alexandru Buligan, football coach Ion Ionescu, football player Ioan Timofte, Honorary Consul of France in Timisoara Dan Bedros, General Manager of Metro Romania Dusan Wilms, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Timisoara Georgica Cornu, General Manager of Transgaz Romania Florin Muntean.

A short interview appears in EETimes Europe, a European monthtly print and online publication, under the heading DSP talent blossoms in Romanian region. Some quotations from the article have been selected in the following.

"Alcatel-Lucent, which also runs an R&D center in Timisoara, has long cooperated with the university on telecommunications engineering, which includes some DSP work, said Mihai Micea, director of the DSP Applications Lab at Politehnica University of Timisoara."
